Hair Loss During Pregnancy
In my recent post, "What's That in My Undies?" I asked you, my dear readers, for more pregnancy-related questions and you delivered! Thank you. The first question I received was from Aisha who wrote,
"I am 3 months pregnant and I have noticed that I am losing more hair than usual especially after I wash it and comb it out. Is that related to my pregnancy?"
Personally, I experienced big-time hair loss for about 4 months after I delivered, as did most of my Mom-friends, but during my pregnancy my locks seemed fuller, brighter and healthier (don't hate me!). Unsure how to answer your question, I turned to Dana Jacoby, MD for the answer.
Dr. Jacoby explained that women usually experience hair loss after pregnancy - which, as I mentioned, I certainly did. During pregnancy, major hair loss would be uncommon and it may be a sign of an underactive thyroid or vitamin deficiency.
You should definitely talk to your health care provider so that they can properly diagnose the cause and determine how best to treat it.
Thanks for your question, Aisha! I'm certain there are other soon-to-be Moms out there with the same concern, happy to know they're not alone and relieved to read that their health care provider can address the problem.
Note: The information provided here is not meant to replace a visit to your health care provider. He or she knows you, and your medical history, better than anyone. We strongly encourage you to speak with your health care professional about your particular health concerns.

For months after each of my children were born, I lost so much hair I honestly didn't understand why I wasn't bald. It came out in clumps every time I washed it and the amount of hair that gathered on my hairbrush could have made a sweater. I think it got better arond the time I stopped breastfeeding but I can't be sure... Either way, don't panic Moms! You wont go bald and all returns to normal soon enough.Mar 12, 2009 15:Mar 3 | phyllis said

I have to admit that I am concernedabout losing my hair because I have very fine hair as it is. I am now 4 months pregnant, I guess I will have to just "roll with the punches".
