Sharonne N. Hayes, MD
Dr. Sharonne N. Hayes is Professor of Medicine and founded and maintains a clinical practice in the Women's Heart Clinic at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where she also serves as Vice Chair, Academic Affairs and Faculty Development, for the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine. With her focus on prevention and equity, Dr. Hayes has long advocated for the advancement of women's health and sex-based medicine within the field of cardiology.
She is a member of numerous national initiatives and groups involved in education, strategic planning, and program development for improvement of health care and reduction of health disparities, empowering patient advocates, and enhancing the professional and personal development and mentorship of women and minority physicians. Since 2002, in partnership with WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease, Dr. Hayes has led the annual Science and Leadership Symposium for Women with Heart Disease, held at the Mayo Clinic, aimed at preparing heart disease survivors to be advocates and educators for other women.
Dr. Hayes' research interests include sex and gender-based cardiology, cardiovascular conditions primarily affecting women, patient-initiated research, spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD), health equity, participation of women and minorities in medical research, health care workforce equity, and the utility and optimal role of social media in health care.
She has been recognized as a recipient of the 2002 WomenHeart Wenger Award. She received an invitation from First Lady Laura Bush to speak at the White House for the first National Wear Red Day in 2004. Dr. Hayes also has been presented with the Woman's Day Magazine “Red Dress Award” in 2009, the 2017 American Heart Association's Council on Clinical Cardiology Women in Cardiology Mentoring Award and the 2022 Dr. Carolyn McCue Award for Woman Cardiologist of the Year by the VCU Health Pauley Heart Center.
