Aretha Watson
Aretha Watson, Ph.D., is a brain injury survivor and a powerful advocate for others on their recovery journey. After two unexpected brain aneurysms forced her to relearn how to walk, talk and regain movement in her left arm, she transformed her personal struggle into a mission to give others hope. Her healing journey was a testament to a multifaceted approach, with physical, occupational, speech and mental health therapies all playing a vital role.
Aretha began this process at the rehab unit at Riverview Medical Center, where she now serves as a peer support volunteer. A seasoned professional with over 20 years of experience in higher education, Aretha is also a BIANJ peer mentor and a certified LoveYourBrain yoga teacher. Her unwavering commitment to advocacy led her to attend Brain Aneurysm Foundation Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C. in 2024 and 2025.
Aretha credits her continued recovery to her profound faith in God, along with the dedicated support of her doctors and nurses and the calming practice of yoga. Her passion is to help patients, families and caregivers navigate life after a health crisis by openly sharing her story and inspiring new passions.
