About The Expert

Michael D. Weinstein, MD, has been Director of the Winthrop Sleep Disorders Center since 1997.

His post-graduate training includes an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at North Shore University Hospital-Cornell University Medical College and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree at New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY, where he was elected to membership in Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society. His undergraduate degree in biology and philosophy was earned at Columbia University.

Under Dr. Weinstein’s leadership, the Winthrop Sleep Disorders Center has developed into one of the leading regional sleep centers. In 2005, Dr. Weinstein established one of the first ACGME-accredited Sleep Medicine fellowships in the nation.

Dr. Weinstein is active in the sleep community locally and nationally and has been instrumental in formalizing the training process for sleep technologists. He is chair of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s Sleep Technologist Issues Committee and has served on its Task Force on Clinical Guidelines for the Evaluation and Management of Adult Obstructive Sleep Apnea. He has also served on the Committee on Accreditation for Polysomnographic Technology, an independent entity which oversees and is responsible for the accreditation of training programs in Polysomnographic Technology nationally. Since 1999 Dr. Weinstein has been medical advisor for the Restless Legs Syndrome support group of Long Island.

Dr. Weinstein is a Diplomate of the American Boards of Pulmonary Disease, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and is a founding member of the New York State Society of Sleep Medicine.
