NWHRC Creates Tool to Help Women Understand Key Men's Health Issues

Online Resource Provides Information on Conditions Such as BPH

Red Bank, NJ - Just in time for National Men's Health Week (June 11-17), the not-for-profit National Women's Health Resource Center (NWHRC) today launched the Men's Health Awareness Tool Kit. The online tool kit, housed at fmxhosting.com/drupal635, is designed to provide women with up-to-date information on the top men's health conditions such as colon cancer, enlarged prostate due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or enlarged prostate, high blood pressure and diabetes.

NWHRC recognizes the vital role women play in men's health. When it comes to health care, women understand the importance of preventive screenings and act on it more often than men do, according to a national survey conducted in 2003 by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics.

"We know women are the health managers of their families," said Elizabeth Battaglino Cahill, RN, executive director of the NWHRC. "In this role, it's important to give women the knowledge they need to talk to the men in their lives about life-threatening and sensitive health conditions in order to ensure a healthy family future."

The tool kit includes:

  • Screening Guidelines: Know your numbers for cholesterol, colon cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, prostate health, testicular cancer and weight management

  • Become an Active Partner in Your Health Care

  • Questions to Ask Your Health Care Professional

  • Fact Sheet: Enlarged Prostate due to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

  • Risk Assessment: Enlarged Prostate due to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

In addition to the tool kit, NWHRC is currently participating in the Unmasking BPH campaign which provides women with tips and advice on how to start a conversation with their husbands about sensitive health conditions, such as BPH, and encourage their men to take action.

The Men's Health Awareness Tool Kit was made possible through an unrestricted grant by Sanofi-Aventis.
