This Valentine's Day Give the Gift of Health

This Saturday is Valentine's Day and you know what? I'm not prepared. Yes, I know I shouldn't wait until the last minute, but I did... again. Oh, I have my cards - that's easy. But I'm always at a loss as to what to buy as a gift.

And this year I am trying, as we all are, to be especially careful with spending.

I might break down and buy something. But I already told my husband (even though I love opening gifts) that I think it would be wise to set a price limit to our purchase(s).

The trouble is, my husband is not like me. I'm so easy to buy for... there are so many things I love. Jewelry, makeup, body lotions, perfume, clothing; where do I stop?

Him? He's low maintenance. There's really not much he needs. I know a gift should be not about need but more about something frivolous and fun that the other person wouldn't normally buy for themselves. But it's also nice to make that something an item that they will also use. That's the practical side of me.

Here's one gift I think everyone can use... and it's free. It's the gift of health. Many men simply do not pay attention to their health, or they're not up on what the latest health screenings/threats/trends are. My husband recently told me - when I was explaining that his snoring was making me tense and raising my cortisol level which caused harmful inflammatory processes in my body - that he wished, instead of being a health writer, I had become a food and wine writer, so I could enchant him with all the latest in what he loves best. You might not be a health writer, but as a woman, you are probably the one in the family who is in charge of health matters. Men oftentimes learn about health from their wives or girlfriends (those should be mutually exclusive!) or mothers. Here's a great place to go to give the man you love a gift of health just in time for Valentine's Day.

PS. And since we're talking health, if you can't resist the urge to wrap a gift, how about some (healthy) dark chocolate for him? There's lots of research that will vouch for its antioxidant qualities, which may reduce cancer risks by fighting cell damage that can lead to tumor growth. The American Institute for Cancer Research says to look for pure dark chocolate that contains at least 65 percent cacao.
