Stuck in the House? Tips for Staying on the Straight and Narrow

I don't know about you, but Sundays always feel like make-up days. I'm forever trying to catch up on the things I didn't get to during the week, like the bills I didn't have time to pay, papers I didn't have time to file, magazines I didn't have time to get the idea. On top of that, there's the laundry. Load after load.

There are only so many hours in the day, and I guess it's necessary to surrender something on the endless "to do" list. Well, today, it was going to the gym. Yesterday as I was calculating all the things I had to do today, I knew I'd never get there.

So, to help assuage my guilt, here's what I did. When I ran my errands yesterday, I chose the parking spot farthest away so I'd be forced to so some extra walking. This morning, I made sure to get out of my comfy pj's and right into my tightest jeans, whose snug waistband helped remind me that unless I lose the five pounds I added this winter, I'd have to move up to the next size. This way, I'd remember to snack on the right things, like yogurt and almonds, rather than the things I'd normally be tempted to eat on a rainy, cloudy day like today (which are more along the lines of cookies and basically, anything sweet).

Some might call me neurotic, but it's my personal way of creating an inner voice of reason and discipline. Perhaps your way is to post a photo of a fat lady on the front of your fridge, or have a buddy you can phone when you're tempted to overeat, or keep a food diary in which you record everything you put into your mouth.

What else? I did laundry - lots of it. My laundry room is down a flight of stairs, so I actually took the opportunity to make multiple trips to get in at least a little exercise. And, instead of letting the dog out into the yard, I took her for a long walk. Afterwards, I even went upstairs to the "forbidden zone" - my son's room - and emptied his garbage, along with all the other garbages around the house.

Tonight when I finally settle down and allow myself to sit, I'll watch the Oscars. Can't wait. But I'll make sure to grab my five-pound hand weights and pump some iron while I enviously eye the gorgeous stars with their killer arms.
