About The Contributor
Ashley Abeles, 35, is a mother, early childhood educator, blogger, and Postpartum Anxiety and Depression survivor.
Ashley holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services, Education, and Public Policy, and a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Special Education. She has completed post-graduate coursework in Applied Behavior Analysis.
Ashley has worked with children and adults with developmental delays and interfering behavior for over ten years as a classroom teacher, home-based therapist, special education itinerant teacher, consultant, staff trainer, and clinical supervisor. She has also served as an Adjunct Instructor at Hunter College.
Following the birth of her first child, Ashley developed debilitating Postpartum Anxiety and Depression. After suffering in silence for nearly nine months, she received appropriate treatment and began her journey to wellness. Ashley has since become an outspoken advocate for maternal mental health care and has publicly shared her story in writing and on television.
Ashley now works to raise awareness of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) and to reduce the culture of shame and silence surrounding issues of mental health. She hopes to facilitate honest discussions about postpartum wellness and to assure all struggling new parents that they are not alone and that, with appropriate treatment, they can get back to being their best selves.
