if you are eligible for free care.
The
Hill-Burton Program
Under the Hill-Burton Program, you are eligible for care if your
income falls below national poverty lines. The national poverty line for 2006 was $20,000 per year for a family of four in all states
except Alaska and Hawaii, where it is higher. For more information
on the poverty guidelines, please visit the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services (HHS) HRSA's poverty guidelines page at: aspe.hhs.gov/poverty/06poverty.shtml
Hill-Burton
facilities are hospitals and nursing homes that have received money
from the federal government and now must provide a certain amount
of free or reduced-cost health services every year to those who
cannot pay. Each Hill-Burton facility may decide which type of free
or reduced-cost care it will provide, and must publish this information
in the newspaper, as well as provide a written notice to you upon
request for Hill-Burton Assistance. You may apply for Hill-Burton
assistance at any time before or after you receive care and even
after a bill has been sent to a collection agency by simply asking
for Hill-Burton assistance.
To obtain a list of Hill-Burton facilities in your area or for more information on the Hill-Burton program and how to get free or reduced-cost health care, call their toll-free hot line: 1-800-638-0742 or go to www.hrsa.gov.
