But college-bound students can arm themselves, experts say

FRIDAY, Aug. 26 (HealthDay News) -- College-bound kids with asthma or allergies need to prepare for September just a little more than other students, experts say.

By taking a few steps in advance to protect themselves, they can take control of their condition and better enjoy college life.

The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology advises that asthmatic and allergic students:

  • Refill prescriptions and find an allergist/immunologist they can see in their college town;
  • Keep their dorm room clean, vacuuming and dusting often to reduce exposure to mold, dust mites, bacteria and viruses;
  • Encase bedding with dust mite-proof covers and wash sheets and blankets weekly in hot water;
  • Be cautious when eating in cafeterias and restaurants, as food cross-contamination could have taken place.

Students also should speak with their roommates about their allergies, so they know what to do if an extreme reaction occurs.
