Health Terms beginning with "Z"

Zaleplon

A hypnotic medication or sleep-causing prescription drug that has been shown in clinical studies to help patients get to sleep quickly without causing next-day residual effects such as grogginess, memory loss, difficulty concentrating or lack of motor coordination.

Zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT)

A combination of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT). Its success rates are lower than either IVF or GIFT. ZIFT also requires a woman's fallopian tubes to be functional. Eggs and sperm are retrieved and combined, and fertilization can be observed in the petri dish. Twenty-four hours after retrieval, the zygotes are returned to the fallopian tube by laparoscopy.
