Introduction

The National Women's Health Resource Center, Inc. (NWHRC) and www.healthywomen.org believe strongly in an individual's right to privacy. We recognize that you trust us to provide quality health information. We apply these same high standards when we protect your personal information in confidentiality and privacy matters.

When you visit www.healthywomen.org, we may request and/or collect a minimal amount of personal information. This information is requested and/or collected in order to better serve you through the various applications at the site.

The information included at Healthywomen.org is provided free-of-charge, and we encourage visitors to gain access to as much health information as possible.

To help consumers understand the personal information we gather and the practices we employ, Healthywomen.org has developed this Privacy Policy.


How is Personal Information Requested and/or Collected and Used at Healthywomen.org?

  1. User (Consumer) Survey - Our user survey includes registering personal information, such as name, email address, address, age, last education level attained, profession, ethnicity, primary language, household income, relationship status, and other variables.

    The information gathered from this user survey is used for internal management purposes, so that we learn about the profile of our user audience. The NWHRC does not sell, rent, loan, trade, lease, or otherwise provide to third parties any individually attributable information. The NWHRC however, reserves the right to review aggregate data and information with third parties to better serve our users, and we do so in a fashion that protects every user's personal information.

  2. Women's Health Surveys - Topic-specific surveys at the site may or may not request a participant to register/provide personal information. Participation in these surveys is completely voluntary and the visitor therefore has a choice whether or not to disclose personal information.

    The information gathered from these women's health surveys are used for internal management purposes, so that we learn, in aggregate form, about lifestyle issues, experiences and opinions of our users. The NWHRC does not sell, rent, loan, trade, lease, or otherwise provide to third parties any individually attributable information. The NWHRC however, reserves the right to review aggregate survey data with third parties to better serve our users, and we do so in a fashion that protects every user's personal information.

  3. Consumer Feedback - When you submit feedback to us through our Feedback Form, and/or info@healthywomen.org and webmaster@healthywomen.org, we ask that you include your name and email address.

    We ask for this information so that we may contact consumers as necessary for additional clarification and to address any questions or feedback that you send us. This clarification will help the NWHRC continue to improve its site and information offered.

  4. Ecommerce
    a. Newsletter Subscription
    When you subscribe to NWHRC newsletters, i.e., the National Women's Health Report, we ask for personal information including your name, email address, phone and fax numbers, billing address, shipping address, and credit card number and expiration.
    We use this information to enable the Center to verify the visitor's identity, process the transaction, verify receipt of payment, confirm shipment information, and provide status reports related to orders. Individual personal information is not sold, rented, loaned, traded, leased or otherwise provided to third parties.

    b. Books/Health Products Purchases - With the exception of NWHRC's Book of Women's Health, when you purchase books/health products, NWHRC does not handle the actual transactions. We have collaborated with Amazon.com, and it is therefore the individual user's responsibility to understand and agree to the terms, conditions and privacy policy of Amazon.com. NWHRC has no control or liability to the actions and policies of Amazon.com.

  5. IP Address - Healthywomen.org collects Internet Protocol (IP) addresses for all of its visitors.

    Healthywomen.org uses this information in aggregate form to analyze visitor trends, administer the site, track users, and gather broad demographic information about our users. IP addresses are not linked to personally identifiable information. Individual IP addresses are not sold, rented, loaned, traded, leased or otherwise provided to third parties.

  6. Email Lists - Healthywomen.org presently does not maintain email lists, however, NWHRC reserves the right to do so in the future.

    If this should take place, email lists would be used to keep healthywomen.org visitors informed as to new information at the site, products, services, and events. The NWHRC would not sell, rent, loan, trade, lease or otherwise provide individual email addresses to third parties. Additionally, we would ensure that list server software does not divulge email addresses of our list subscribers to anyone other than Healthywomen.org staff.

  7. Interactive Tools - Healthywomen.org presently does not have interactive tools, however, NWHRC reserves the right to develop or license interactive tools in the future.

    If this should take place, the interactive tools may collect personal information if you so choose to use them. When you use a tool, it would not store personal information unless this is requested. Therefore, you would be able to use the tools and choose not to store your personal information; it is deleted and no longer accessible to anyone. If you choose to store the information, it would be collected by Healthywomen.org and subject to the overall Privacy Policy. Healthywomen.org cannot access personally identifiable information, nor will it share this information with others, unless the user expressly provides permission to do so, or we are required to disclose such information according to law.

    When a tool is provided at the site, NWHRC/healthywomen.org will disclose its source and a description of the scientific basis for its operation. As appropriate, NWHRC will describe how it maintains the tools, including an evaluation process and the date of the last review or update.

  8. Discussions at Healthywomen.org - Healthywomen.org may offer discussions (bulletin boards), chats and other types of public forums to our users. These forums require registering under an ID and password. Our users are advised that disclosure of information at these public forums becomes public record, and they should post information with caution. NWHRC's Privacy Policy does not protect you when you use public forums. We recommend that you do not use public forums to share personal information such as medical conditions due to the accessibility of that information by all who have access to it as a public domain. You should be aware that any information shared in a public chat room, bulletin board or online activity is considered public information and may be seen or collected by third parties that do not adhere to our Privacy Policy nor are in the control of NWHRC. You should think carefully before disclosing any personal information in any public forum.

    These forums are to be respected and to be used professionally. Healthywomen.org will take steps to remove individuals from the forums who do not respect discussions protocol, such as those who include abusive language or demonstrate pornographic behavior.

    Healthywomen.org uses this information in the event that the participants violate the terms and conditions of these discussions and we need to contact visitors. Healthywomen.org uses the information collected in these forums to evaluate consumer thoughts and behaviors in aggregate form.

  9. Email A Friend - In the event that the visitor uses our service to inform a friend about the site and/or to send information, we ask for his/her email, and the friend's name and email address.

    Healthywomen.org uses this information to automatically send the friend a one-time email with this information, and stores this information for the sole purpose of sending this one-time email. The friend is instructed to contact www.healthywomen.org to request the removal of this information from the database.


How Does Healthywomen.org Disclose Information?

Healthywomen.org does not sell, rent, loan, lease or otherwise provide any personal information collected at our site to any third parties.


How Does Healthywomen.org use Cookies?

When you logon to Healthywomen.org, a cookie is generated on the server, or the machine that hosts the site. The cookie is a randomly generated number that does not include any of your personal information. This randomly generated number or cookie remains on the server machine, not on your computer, until you leave the site. When you visit Healthywomen.org again, a different, unique randomly generated number or cookie is assigned.

Healthywomen.org uses cookies for user convenience. This enables the visitor to use the site without needing to input the same personal information over and over again. Cookies also enable Healthywomen.org on an aggregate basis to track site navigation, such as what sections visitors are visiting, and how long they stay there. Healthywomen.org does not collect this information using personal information.

Healthywomen.org does not and will not use cookies to direct advertisers to you based on your personal information. Additionally, Healthywomen.org does not and will not allow third parties to include cookies in their banners/promotional logos.


How Does Healthywomen.org Secure Your Information?

NWHRC places your personal information as its highest priority. Therefore, when you register personal information at healthywomen.org, we use a unique security system that combines leading technical safeguards, encryption and a code of conduct for employees who access any information. NWHRC uses Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption technology in transmitting your personal information to our servers to ensure the integrity and privacy of your personal information. Also, all transactions are conducted through secure servers, which are protected behind state-of-the-art firewalls.

You should be aware that there is always some risk involved in transmitting any information, personal or otherwise, over the Internet. There is also some risk and no guarantee that a site is completely secure from individuals who try to evade security measures. Healthywomen.org will make every reasonable effort to protect your personal information from loss, misuse or alteration.


How Does Healthywomen.org Cooperate with Law Enforcement Officials?

Due to the existing regulatory environment, we cannot ensure that all of your private communications and other personally identifiable information will never be disclosed in ways not otherwise described in this Privacy Policy.

Healthywomen.org cooperates with all law enforcement inquiries and with third parties to enforce their intellectual property or other rights. Therefore, those third parties, local, state and federal law enforcement can request your name, street address, city, state, zip code, country, phone number and email address. By way of example, Healthywomen.org may be required to disclose information to the government or others under certain circumstances or third parties may unlawfully intercept private communications. Furthermore, we may release personal information in order to comply with valid legal requirements such as a law, regulation, search warrant, subpoena, or court order.


Information from Third Parties

From time to time, the NWHRC may offer our users the opportunity to obtain promotional and product information directly from third-party sponsors. To obtain this information, consumers will be instructed to "opt-in" or "opt-out." By opting-in, certain personal information will be requested from the consumer. The user should be aware that any personal information disclosed once you access these third party sites is not subject to this Privacy Policy. NWHRC does not endorse and is not responsible for the privacy practices of these third party sites. You should review the privacy policy posted on the third party site to understand how that third party collects and uses personal information. At any time, the consumer will be able to change its decision by visiting the particular Web site section and modifying their previous decision.


NWHRC Partners

As a course of business, the NWHRC may partner with third parties in an effort to more broadly disseminate health information, as well as receive services/information for its Web site. These partners may include, but are not limited to, dot.coms, health care companies, news services, and vendors. The NWHRC does not sell, rent, loan, trade, lease or otherwise provide individual consumer/user information to these third parties. The NWHRC does not endorse and is not responsible for the privacy policies of these third parties, as indicated in the above section (Information from Third Parties) nor is it legally responsible for content that they may be providing to NWHRC.


NWHRC Links

Healthywomen.org contains numerous links to health information, corporate and organizational Web sites. The NWHRC does not endorse and is not responsible for the privacy policies of these third parties, nor is it responsible for content that they provide. We encourage our users to review and understand the privacy policies posted at these sites.


Electronic Newsletters

The National Women's Health Resource Center (NWHRC) offers free e-mail newsletters. They include the electronic version of the bi-monthly National Women's Health Report; HealthyWomen Take 10, a monthly e-newsletter, and two editions of News from the NWHRC, one for consumers and one for health care professionals, which are mailed twice a month.

Anyone can subscribe to these newsletters; the only information that is required is a valid e-mail address. NWHRC sends e-mail newsletters only to those who have specifically given us their permission to mail them to them. NWHRC will never share, sell or rent your newsletter subscriber data or personal information with third parties without your advance permission.

All e-newsletters offered by NWHRC contain a remove link at the bottom of the message. A subscriber may remove their e-mail address permanently from the list by clicking the link and selecting the "unsubscribe" function.

Every page of the Web site offers the consumer the opportunity to contact the NWHRC with any questions concerning one's health, and existing policies, including the Disclaimer, Privacy Policy, Advertising Policy, and Editorial Policy. These questions are directed to info@healthywomen.org.

Every page also offers the consumer the opportunity to contact the NWHRC with questions/concerns regarding site functionality. The following email address is used for this purpose: webmaster@healthywomen.org.

Due to the rapidly evolving technologies on the Internet, we reserve the right to update this Privacy Policy from time to time. All revisions will be posted to this site.
