A Valentine for Your Heart From the National Women's Health Resource Center
Monday, February 14, 2005

Because women need to love and care for their heart, the nation's leading source of women's health information is launching its year-long campaign, "Take 10 for Your Heart," on Valentine's Day. The public education campaign from the National Women's Health Resource Center (NWHRC) begins with a new, comprehensive, easy-to-understand guide to women and heart disease, the Take 10 for Your Heart Tool Kit, at its Web site, www.healthywomen.org.

"Medical research shows that even a short ten minutes of healthful activity can have a long-term effect on your health," according to Amy Niles, president and CEO of the program's organizer, the National Women's Health Resource Center (NWHRC). "More women die of heart disease than any other cause. African-American and Hispanic women have the highest risk of death from heart disease but know less about the risk factors. And, more women than men die of stroke. That's why our focus is on getting women everywhere to "take 10" for their health and their heart including the 10 minutes it will take to check out our online guide."

Including in the kit are separate articles filled with practical information about:

  • What is CVD?
  • 10 Things to Know about Your Risk for Heart Disease
  • Warning Signs of Heart Attack
  • Warning Signs of Stroke
  • Heart Disease and Diabetes: Know the Signs
  • Know Your Numbers: Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Blood Sugar
  • Questions to Ask Your Health Care Professional about Women and Heart Disease, Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Atherosclerosis and other related conditions
  • How to Take 10 for Heart Healthy Living
  • How to Take 10 for Cardio Fitness
  • Resources

In the coming months the NWHRC will be introducing new publications and products to make it easier for today's busy woman to take care of her heart.

"Women's heart health will be our priority throughout the coming year," said Niles. "It is too important to talk about only for one day or one month. That's why we'll be announcing new activities and projects each month during 2005."

Women without access to the Internet can order a copy of the tool kit by calling the NWHRC at 1-877-986-9472.
