Surrogacy: An option for women who cannot carry a pregnancy. Using in vitro fertilization, a couple's egg and sperm are placed into another woman's uterus. Known as the gestational surrogate, she will carry and deliver any resulting fetus to term but has no genetic relationship with the fetus. Genetic surrogacy is another option, in which the surrogate donates her eggs. Many legal issues are involved with this option.
