Sentinel lymph node biopsy: A diagnostic surgical technique in which dye is injected into the skin at the site of a melanoma tumor to identify the one or several "sentinel" lymph nodes in the region that "cleanse" that area of the skin. These few lymph nodes are then removed and carefully examined for evidence of cancer.
