Primary Sjögren's syndrome: When Sjögren's syndrome occurs alone, it is called primary Sjögren's syndrome. It's a chronic, incurable disorder in which immune-system cells attack and destroy the glands that produce tears and saliva. The syndrome is named after Swedish ophthalmologist Henrik Sjögren. When associated with other autoimmune/rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus it's called secondary Sjögren's syndrome.
