Pelvic exam: Part of a gynecological examination in which the genital area is inspected for abnormalities. An instrument called a speculum is inserted into the upper vagina to hold open the birth canal while the cervix is examined and specimens are obtained. The health care professional may also use his or her hands to feel for abnormal swelling, masses or tenderness.
