Menstrual cycle: Also called a period. A monthly process in which your body sheds the lining of the uterus. The buildup of tissue, blood and fluids is necessary to help prepare the uterus to support a pregnancy. When pregnancy doesn't occur, the body expels these substances and immediately starts making a new lining. It might be a year or more after your first period before your period comes regularly every month.
