Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): The patient is safely surrounded by a magnetic field through which pulses of radio frequency radiation are projected. The test can show differences in tissue and bone structure and help identify masses. The test carries little risk and can be performed during pregnancy. However, it cannot be used on pateints who have metal in their body, such as metal clips or plates, or a pacemaker. Some patients complain of claustrophobia during the test, but a mild sedative may help. This can be performed on an outpatient basis.
