Depression: A serious but common mental disorder that can affect anyone, including children, teens, women, men and the elderly. Feelings of hopelessness, sadness, weight gain or loss, trouble concentrating and sleeping, or sleeping too much and a general disinterest in things that used to be enjoyable are hallmark symptoms. Physical symptoms may include persistent headaches, stomach distress and general malaise for which there are no apparent cause.
