Antihistamines: A class of drugs used to counter the effects of histamine, a chemical produced by the body when an allergen is present, and one that causes many allergy symptoms. Can be used to relieve sneezing and itchy eyes, nose and throat and to control nasal swelling and draining. Available in both over-the-counter and prescription forms. Can also be used to treat some insomnia.
