Antidepressants: These prescription drugs change the levels of neurotransmitters and alter the pain messages reaching the brain. When a woman is depressed and in pain, these medications can reduce pain and improve mood. Certain types of antidepressants help to restore the body's normal perception of pain and may be recommended as a treatment option when a patient isn't depressed.
