Antidepressant drugs: These prescription drugs reduce depression by the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain and alter the pain messages reaching the brain. When a woman is depressed and in pain, these medications can reduce pain and improve mood. Certain types of antidepressants help restore the body's normal perception of pain and may be recommended even when a patient isn't depressed.
