- Congestive heart failure
- A condition in which the heart cannot pump out all of the blood that enters it, which leads to congestion of blood in the vessels and fluid in the body tissues. A number of things can cause congestive heart failure, including narrowed arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle (coronary artery disease), scar tissue resulting from a past heart attack that interferes with the heart muscles' functioning, disease of the heart organ itself, heart defects, infection of the heart valves or high blood pressure. People with congestive heart failure become short of breath and tired and cannot exert themselves as they normally would.
