Acetaminophen: The active ingredient in the non-anti-inflammatory pain reliever Tylenol and similar products. This drug does not irritate the stomach and is less likely than NSAIDs to cause long-term side effects. Research has shown that in many patients with osteoarthritis, acetaminophen relieves pain as effectively as NSAIDs. (Patients with liver disease and heavy alcohol drinkers should not use acetaminophen without first talking to a health care professional.)
