About "NWHRC Endometriosis: Ask the Experts Panel"

"NWHRC Endometriosis: Ask the Experts Panel" is a question and answer column produced by the National Women's Health Resource Center (NWHRC). The questions submitted to the service are answered by the NWHRC Endometriosis: Ask the Experts panel, a team of medical experts with extensive research and clinical experience related to reproductive health. Members of the panel include: Dr. Thomas Lyons, Eric S. Surrey, MD and John F. Steege, MD. Their biographies are below:

Dr. Thomas Lyons

Dr. Thomas Lyons

Dr. Thomas Lyons is medical director of HealthSouth Surgery Center and is on staff at Northside Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital and Northside Cherokee in Georgia. His clinical practice is the Center for Women's Care & Reproductive Surgery in Dunwoody, GA. He also conducts resident training at Atlanta Medical Center in conjunction with the Medical College of Georgia and is an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Georgia.

A graduate of the University of Georgia with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's in clinical and biopsychology, Dr. Lyons earned his medical degree from the University of Colorado, where he financed his education playing football with the Denver Broncos. An accomplished pianist, he was honored by the invitation to guest conduct the Denver Symphony Orchestra during his time there.

Dr. Lyons has participated in numerous academic and clinical studies and authored more than 150 scholarly publications. He is coauthor of What To Do When The Doctor Says It's Endometriosis: Everything You Need to Know to Stop the Pain and Heal Your Fertility.

His clinical practice is devoted to gynecologic endoscopy, pelvic reconstructive surgery and infertility. He is dedicated to the development and teaching of minimally invasive, patient-friendly procedures to physicians worldwide and is a recognized leader in exploring causes and prevention of pelvic pain, including adhesion-related disorders.

Eric S. Surrey, MD

Eric S. Surrey, MD

Eric Surrey is medical director of the Colorado Center of Reproductive Medicine in Englewood, CO. He completed his undergraduate education at Harvard University and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He is a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist, who completed residency and fellowship training in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the UCLA School of Medicine in Los Angeles, CA. Before joining CCRM in 1999, he was an associate clinical professor of Ob-Gyn at UCLA and had been director of both the Division of Reproductive Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the Assisted Reproductive Technologies program at Century City Hospital in Los Angeles. He is past president of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology, Society of Reproductive Surgeons and Pacific Coast Reproductive Society and past member of the board of directors of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists. He has written and lectured extensively on infertility, reproductive surgery and endometriosis, as well as numerous aspects of in vitro fertilization and other assisted reproductive technologies.

John F. Steege, MD

John F. Steege, MD

Dr. John F. Steege is a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is director of UNC's Division of Advanced Laparoscopy and Pelvic Pain, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Before coming to UNC, he was at Duke University Medical Center.

Dr. Steege received his doctor of medicine degree from Yale University School of Medicine and completed his residency and fellowship training at Yale-New Haven Hospital. His clinical interests include advanced operative laparoscopy, benign gynecologic surgery, pelvic pain and endometriosis.

He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists. His other professional service includes the International Pelvic Pain Society, the American Pain Society, the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, the International Association for the Study of Pain, the American Fertility Society/American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the Bayard Carter Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the North Carolina Obstetrical and Gynecological Society and the Association of Professors of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Steege has received many honors and awards, including being named to various lists for America's top doctors, top women's doctors, and top obstetricians and gynecologists. He has published numerous articles on pelvic pain and other topics in leading obstetric and gynecologic publications.
