About "NWHRC Breast Health Advisory Panel"
The "NWHRC Breast Health: Ask the Experts" question and answer service is produced by the National Women's Health Resource Center (NWHRC). The questions submitted to the service are answered by the NWHRC Breast Health Advisory Panel, a team of medical experts with extensive clinical experience in breast health. Members of the NWHRC Breast Health Advisory Panel include: Julie Gralow, MD; Caroline A. Glicksman, MD; Arpana M. Naik, MD; Lillie D. Shockney, RN, BS, MAS; and Navin K. Singh, MD. Their biographies are below:
Dr. Julie Gralow is an associate professor of Medical Oncology at the University of Washington School of Medicine and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
As a breast cancer specialist and academician, Dr. Gralow's time is split between patient care, education, and clinical research. She is the principle investigator on several clinical trials related to breast cancer treatment, and is committed to patient education, outreach and wellness. She co-chairs the Southwest Oncology Group's Breast Cancer Committee, and is chair of the medical advisory committee of the Expedition Inspiration Breast Cancer Foundation. Dr. Gralow's primary research interests focus on the prevention and treatment of bone metastases in breast cancer. She has been published in Cancer Immunology, Immunotherapy and in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
Aside from her academic duties, Dr. Gralow is director of the American Cancer Society/University of Washington Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship Program. In addition, she participates in the Washington division of the American Cancer Society's Speakers Bureau and is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Society for Breast Disease.
Dr. Gralow is also Medical Director, Team Physician and co-founder of Team Survivor Northwest, an exercise and fitness program for women cancer survivors. She is co-author of Breast Fitness: An Optimal Exercise and Health Plan for Reducing Your Risk of Breast Cancer (St. Martin's Press, 2000).
Dr. Gralow earned her undergraduate degree in Biologic Sciences at Stanford University. She attended medical school at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, and trained as a resident in Internal Medicine at Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Dr. Gralow's Medical Oncology fellowship training was performed at the University of Washington School of Medicine and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

| Caroline A. Glicksman, MD |
Dr. Caroline Glicksman maintains an active private plastic surgery practice in both Sea Girt and Red Bank, NJ. She is a full attending physician at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Meridian Health and at the Center for Special Surgery in Wall, NJ.
Dr. Glicksman is a national authority on breast implant surgery, and has published papers on the long-term management of breast implants in journals such as the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Journal of Antimicrobacterial Agents and Chemotherapy. In 2004, she presented on the topic of advances in breast augmentation at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons' national meeting. In 2003, Dr. Glicksman testified before the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel on silicone implants. She is credited with bringing more patients to testify on behalf of silicone safety than any other physician in the United States. She has been involved in core studies with the manufacturers of implants and the FDA since 1995, and uses both saline and silicone gel implants in her practice.
Dr. Glicksman received her undergraduate degrees from the University of Massachusetts, with a Bachelors of Science in Microbiology and a Bachelors of Arts degree in Sociology. She attended medical school at SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn, NY, and her general surgery training at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Her residency in plastic surgery was completed at New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital. There she performed more breast reconstructions in two years than most physicians perform in a lifetime. She went on to complete a fellowship in cosmetic and breast surgery in Boston at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Glicksman is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. She is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, NJ Society of Plastic Surgeons, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Monmouth County Medical Society.
Dr. Arpana M. Naik is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and is also a faculty member with the OHSU Cancer Institute and the OHSU Center for Women's Health. Dr. Naik is one of the few physicians at OHSU whose practice is fully dedicated to the surgical management of breast diseases and breast cancer.
Dr. Naik completed a fellowship in breast surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She also performed research in cancer gene therapy during her surgical oncology fellowship at the National Cancer Institute of the NIH. Dr. Naik was chief surgical resident in general surgery and also received her medical degree from New York University School of Medicine. She graduated magna cum laude from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature.
In addition to patient care, Dr. Naik is involved in teaching and clinical research. Her research interests include the examination of women at high risk for breast cancer, ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in access to breast care, and surgical outcomes. She is also organizes multidisciplinary, comprehensive treatment for breast cancer patients at OHSU and coordinates participation in several multi-institutional breast cancer trials, including trials run by the Southwest Oncology Group. Dr. Naik is very committed to community outreach and breast cancer education and has given regional lectures to patients on breast cancer prevention and new treatment modalities.
Dr. Naik is a member of both the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons, and is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery. She has been published in Annals of Surgery and The American Journal of Surgery, and has presented papers on her research on sentinel lymph node biopsy, ethnic differences in breast cancer presentation, and gene therapy at a number of prestigious national and international conferences.

Lillie Shockney is Administrative Director of the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center in Baltimore, MD, a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary breast care program, which is part of the renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital. A widely published author and speaker on the subject of breast cancer, Ms. Shockney is a registered nurse with a BS degree in Health Care Administration from Saint Joseph's College and a Masters degree in Administrative Science from Johns Hopkins University. She has been employed at Johns Hopkins since 1983.
A breast cancer survivor herself, Ms. Shockney is the author of two books and numerous articles on the subject of breast cancer. Her current book, recently published as a revised edition (Ogden Publications, 2003) is called Breast Cancer Survivor's Club -- A Nurse's Experience. Her second book, Journey of Hope, published by Sprint PCS in 2001, was provided to more than 800 breast centers nationwide, free-of-charge, for newly diagnosed women. In addition, she has been featured in numerous national magazines and national television shows for her outstanding contributions to nursing, including a Discovery Health Television documentary that aired in 2001.
Active in many national, regional and local breast cancer organizations, Ms. Shockney is the co-founder and vice president of a national non-profit organization called "Mothers Supporting Daughters with Breast Cancer." She is a member of the Advisory Board and Board of Trustees of the National Consortium of Breast Centers and serves on numerous other boards.
The recipient of many prestigious national leadership and community service awards, Ms. Shockney received the "Impact Award" from the National Consortium of Breast Centers in 2003 for her lifetime achievement in making measurable improvements nationally to the treatment of breast cancer. Ms. Shockney also received both the American Cancer Society's "Faces of Breast Cancer" and the Oncology Nursing Society "Award for Excellence in Breast Cancer Education" awards in 2002.
Dr. Navin K. Singh is an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Division of Plastic, Reconstructive and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is an attending surgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Center for Cosmetic Surgery, and the UMMS R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy and mathematics from Brown University, and graduated at the top of his class at Brown University Medical School. He also holds a Masters degree in Clinical Biostatistics from Harvard.
Dr. Singh maintains an active surgical practice focusing on breast surgery, microvascular reconstruction, abdominal wall reconstruction, diagnosis and treatment of lesions, and aesthetic surgery. His research interests include minimally invasive plastic surgery, endoscopic techniques, and computer-assisted and robotic assisted plastic surgery.
Dr. Singh is widely published and is a member of many prestigious national surgical organizations such as The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The American College of Surgeons, and The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. He has been published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Annals of Plastic Surgery, and is on the editorial board of The Aesthetic Surgery Journal. He has contributed book chapters for Current Therapy in Plastic Surgery, AO Manual of Internal Fixation of the Craniomaxillofacial Skeleton, Surgical Therapy, and Alarm Bells in Medicine. As an educator, he teaches at board review courses and writes for the annual in-training examination for plastic surgery. He has been featured in both print and broadcast media for his innovative work, and received the "Hero Award" from the Shock Trauma Center as well as two "Teacher of the Year" Awards from the Johns Hopkins Plastic Surgery Residents.
Dr. Singh speaks nationally and internationally on microvascular reconstruction, breast reconstruction, complex abdominal wall reconstruction, advances in liposuction, and preserving nipple-areolar sensation following reduction mammoplasty. He is a requested speaker on many topics at the major medical centers here in the USA and has been sought to perform surgery on numerous international dignitaries and royalty both here and abroad. As an advocate for patients, he sits on the Research Commission of the ASPS as well as the Government Affairs Committee.
