Wulf H. Utian, MD, PhD

Wulf H. Utian, MD, PhD, is a consultant gynecologist at The Cleveland Clinic, where he is in active clinical practice, serves as the Executive Director of The North American Menopause Society (NAMS), and is President of Rapid Medical Research, Inc., where he is an active research investigator. He also serves as an independent consultant to industry lectures worldwide and is considered to be one of the most significant authorities on menopause and women's health issues. Previously, he was Director, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The Mt. Sinai Medical Center of Cleveland (1980-1989), Director, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University Hospitals of Cleveland and MacDonald Hospital for Women (1989-1999), and Chairman of the Department of Reproductive Biology, Case Western Reserve University (1989-1999).

Dr. Utian received his medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa (1962), and his PhD from the University of Cape Town, South Africa (1970). He is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology; and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the International College of Surgeons. Dr. Utian is a credentialed NAMS Menopause Practitioner, is certified in Clinical Densitometry, and is a specialist in the fields of gynecological endocrinology and infertility. He has been an innovator in several aspects of advanced reproductive technology. Dr. Utian has studied the metabolic and psychosocial aspects of estrogen and menopause for over 35 years. In 1967, he established the Groote Schuur Menopause Research Clinic in Cape Town, South Africa, the world's first such clinic. He is the recipient of numerous awards and research grants, and is still an active investigator with multiple grants.

Dr. Utian is a member of numerous professional societies, both in the United States and abroad. He is also an active member on a number of national and international committees, including the Board of Trustees of NAMS (Founding President from 1989 to 1992). Dr. Utian served as the Chairman of the Council of Affiliated Menopause Societies -- the policy-making organ of the International Menopause Society, of which he is the Honorary Past President.

During his career, Dr. Utian has written over 190 papers related to the reproductive system in women and has authored five books on menopause. He is Editor of Menopause, NAMS's official journal, and Menopause Management, a NAMS-endorsed publication. Dr. Utian has served as an advisor to the Office of Technology Assessment (U.S. Federal Government) on menopause, committees for the Office of Women's Health at NIH, and has testified before Congress on women's health issues.

A dedicated advocate for women's health, Dr. Utian has achieved international recognition for his work and is interviewed regularly for such publications as Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. He was honored by Good Housekeeping magazine in July 1997 as "one of America's best physicians in women's health," by Ladies Home Journal in March 1999 as one of the "top 10 researchers in women's health," was the first recipient of the NAMS Lifetime Achievement Award in September 1999, and was honored by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in 2000 for his achievements in the area of menopause.
