Breast Reduction

An estimated 104,455 breast reductions were performed in 2006, a 23 percent increase since 2000. This increase put breast reduction into the top five reconstructive procedures performed by plastic surgeons.

Most women who choose breast reduction surgery suffer from breast hyperplasia, or overly large breasts, which can cause physical or emotional pain. The procedure may be performed on girls as young as 11 who develop prematurely large breasts out of proportion to their body; adolescent girls with extremely large breasts that lead to teasing; and adult women who wish to eliminate large, sagging breasts that may cause significant neck, shoulder and back pain.

Unlike breast augmentation, health insurance typically covers the cost of breast reduction, if there is evidence of significant psychological and physical effects.

There are numerous surgical procedures available to reduce breast size and volume. It is important to speak with your plastic surgeon to determine which procedure is right for you based on your individual medical history and needs.
