There is still no known way to prevent breast cancer. An estimated 178,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. by the end of 2007, in addition to 62,030 new cases of noninvasive breast cancer. This year alone, 40,460 women nationwide are expected to die from the disease. But advances are being made: If breast cancer is caught early before it spreads, the five-year survival rate is now 98 percent. The key is early detection and treatment.
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October), the National Women's Health Resource Center encourages women to learn about breast cancer—a disease for which all women are at risk.
This guide is designed to provide you with the latest breast health recommendations and resources, including resources for finding free and low-cost mammograms and breast screenings in your area. Remember, mammograms and regular breast exams done by a health care professional are the most reliable methods for finding breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages.
