Lillie Shockney, RN, BS, MAS

Mrs. Shockney is a registered nurse with a BS degree in Health Care Administration and a Masters in Administrative Science from the Johns Hopkins University. She has been employed at Johns Hopkins since 1983 in various nursing positions with a concentration in oncology care.

After a personal experience with breast cancer in 1992, Mrs. Shockney began volunteering her time the Breast Center. In 1997 she formally joined the Breast Center staff as the Education and Outreach Director, responsible for the quality of care programs, patient education programs, survivor volunteer team, community outreach, Webmaster and patient advocacy.

Mrs. Shockney is a published author and nationally recognized public speaker on breast cancer. She has written two books and more than 50 articles on this subject. She is also involved with numerous national, regional, and local breast cancer organizations and is the co-founder and vice president of a national non-profit organization called Mothers Supporting Daughters with Breast Cancer.

She is the recipient of numerous community service awards. She was the recipient of the Outstanding Women of American Award. In 1997 she was awarded the Distinguished Graduate for Lifetime Achievement Award and in 1998 received the National Silver Medal Award from the National Consumer Health Information Center. In 1999 she was the recipient of the National Circle of Life Award from Shape Magazine and the National Race for the Cure; the Komen Volunteer Award for her work with breast cancer patients and their families; Intel's Internet Health Hero Award; the American Cancer Society's Voice of Hope Award; In 2000 she was selected as an Unsung Hero for Breast Cancer. In 2001 she was chosen by the American Cancer Society to receive the Lane Adams Award. Also during 2002, she was the recipient of the Oncology Nursing Society's prestigious national Excellence in Breast Cancer Education. Award. She was selected by the American Cancer Society to be one of 12 women featured in their 2002 calendar called "Faces of Breast Cancer," available nationwide.
